Welcome! I’m Crystal, and I am a twenty-something year old who made the scary decision to quit my job without a plan. Sort of. With my love of writing, all things beauty, food, and without a mortgage to pay or kids to raise, I’ve had the opportunity to experiment with a new lifestyle as a Stay-At-Home Girlfriend.
Last December, I took a crazy leap of faith and left my 40-hour-a-week, reliable-biweekly-paycheck, benefits-providing job to pursue a less traditional career path involving writing, making my own schedule, and indulging in figuring out just exactly who I was. While I had a lot of ideas and projects I wanted to take on, I didn’t have a rock solid plan regarding exactly what I was going to do. After hours upon hours spent scouring beauty blogs, testing out new slow cooker recipes, couponing to save money, and dog walking to earn a little extra cash, I joked with my mom and boyfriend that I was a professional Stay-At-Home Girlfriend – and suddenly the idea for Stay-At-Home Girlfriend was born.
I have to admit, I get skeptical looks from friends and family when I answer their questions of “So what exactly do you do now?” The question can be tough to answer, because what I do involves so many things – I spend a few hours each day with adorable puppies, I go to stores to hunt down the best deals to share with the How To Shop For Free couponing community, I clean and organize, and reorganize my apartment, I cook, I obsess over new makeup and skincare trends, I photograph a thousand moments just incase someone might be interested in what I see, and I write down absolutely everything.
No, I don’t have a “normal” 9-5, or a steady paycheck, I’m not married and I don’t have kids, but I’m part of this stay-at-home culture that is quietly emerging; spending 40+ hours behind a desk in an office building isn’t for everyone, and there is a world of “jobs” you can take on right from home – which is exactly the world I am exploring here at Stay-At-Home Girlfriend. I don’t have it all figured out just yet, so what you will see here is an experiment of sorts on my part – trying on different roles and seeing what fits. Stay-At-Home Girlfriend is a place for me to document this journey, but it’s also a place for anyone who has ditched their 9-5 to find support and inspiration in their journey.
